Develop your skills and talents to perfection and outsource what you
lack. If you have a talent for writing, become the perfect
salesletterwriter and if you don ‘t know how to build a web site let an
expert do that for you. By using education and outsourcing all tasks in
your business are done well and you stay ahead of your competitors. 1.
Your Objective and Strategy If you organize your business you formulate
an objective and develop a strategy to reach that objective. You also
define the tools that you need to make the strategy work. Like sales
letters, budgets, investment in hardware and software, education has to
be an integral part of your tool box. When you have the whole picture
ready you have a very good idea what skills and abilities you need to
bring the journey to a good end. But there is another thing. 2. Changes
We live in a time of rapid changes. Everything around us changes in an
incredible speed and it effects us all. There is also an effect on the
way we are doing business. New views on economics, technical changes, new
and very fast ways of communication through the virtual highway…it all
asks for an attitude of anticipation and a refreshment of knowledge,
skills and abilities. You must prepare yourself in time for the future.
If you don ‘t, you lose because your competitors do and try to take your
share of the market. 3. Talents Everybody has talents. One has a talent
for languages and is an excellent copy writer, another has a creative
talent and is a very good web designer. Your talents make you good in one
task and less suitable for others. You should constantly evaluate
yourself; which task is done well and which task needs improvement.
However the problem is that with the growing complexity of your business
you can ‘t do everything equally well. And to be successful every aspect
of your business has to be outstanding. 4. Two Lessons There is something
funny about people. What they don ‘t have they will never get. A lack of
talent for mathematics can never be compensated by studying hard. It will
always be a weak point. On the other hand, they can improve their real
talents into perfection. This holds two lessons for you and these lessons
are: 1. Never try to learn something for which you don ‘t have a talent.
It takes a lot of time and money to only understand the basics. Time and
money can be better used. E.g. for talking with an expert in the field
you try and cannot master. This is called outsourcing. Outsourcing to
others what they do more efficiently is a successful management strategy
and not a sign of weakness. 2. Develop your talents into perfection.
Never stop improving yourself in the things you are really good at.
Become an expert in what suits you. Education is the only way to improve
the knowledge of your own intellectual capital The bottomline of this
article is that you should be well aware of your talents as well as of
your limitations when developing your business or anticipating changes.

I have searched high and low and tried MLM’s such as Market America,
Quixstar, Trek Alliance and Amway. The business idea works, however
people need to sell products and build their downline to be successful. I
hated the idea of trying to convince people that Market America, Quixstar
and all the other MLM’s worked. In fact, that was the hardest thing to do

recommend a few hundred dollars until you get to know the system and
become more comfortable with the exchange network.

It is often difficult to appear professional if you are working
out of the home, among noisy children, barking dogs, hungry
spouses waiting for dinner. And certainly many potential
clients express open disdain if they call your home and hear
screaming children in the background while you try to converse
professionally.

It’s unfortunate, but many ill informed clients assume that
home based business owners are not as serious about their business
or that their work is not as good as a large company. If the
home based business owner wants to survive in this highly
competitive world he must demand respect and project the image
of a professional business person who is capable of handling
any job, large or small.

Let’s tackle a few ways you can appear professional, even if
your office is a small space in the corner of your bedroom. I
am assuming you have a complete computer set-up already. This
would include your computer, printer, scanner, fax.

Purchase an answering machine and use it on a separate telephone
line employed only for business calls. This will establish a
professional image, especially if a client calls and you are
unavailable. Plus, your telephone line will not be tied up with
personal calls for the family.

Or if you prefer, you could opt for voice mail. You can easily
purchase this through your local telephone company. For a modest
fee per month, through your existing telephone number, you can
set up several mailboxes to take messages when you are unavailable.

Another way to project a very professional image is to purchase,
or print up on your home computer, business cards. The information
on your cards should include your name, business name, your title,
address, telephone, fax, email address, URL address, cellular
telephone number. Give these business cards out when ever possible.
These cards will help to remind potential clients of
your services and make it easy for them to contact you.

And of course you will need suitable business stationary to keep
in contact with your clients. If you are on a budget, print up
your own stationary on the best paper you can afford. There are
many inexpensive software programs you can use to handle this
project.

Purchase brochure paper at your local office supply store and
print up your own advertising material with all your contact
information included.

You might also want to establish a one page web-site on the
Internet to serve as an Online business card to potential
clients. Include all the information you’ve printed on your business
card, plus, a little background information about your company.
Remember to register the site in all the major search
engines.

You live in a residential area and receive a large quantity of
packages. In order to appear professional, plus cut down on the
neighborhood traffic congestion, set up an account at a local mail
drop center. Many of them will give you a professional sounding
address for all your business mail.

Engineering Job News: Tips To Survive Offshore Outsourcing

The cheap labor costs of Southeast Asia are like a siren call to more and
more US employers seeking to lower support costs and improve profits. The
increasingly common trend toward outsourcing labor to countries such as
India, Malaysia, and Pakistan means jobs are leaking to a part of the
world where workers fresh out of college or technical school will work
for pennies on the dollar compared to American workers. For the American
workers, that means the bar for entry-level positions is rising or the
same positions are disappearing off the map completely. What can you do
to avoid losing out to offshore outsourcing??

Don ‘t become a target.

What should you do if you find yourself facing joblessness due to
outsourcing? Many would say make yourself indispensable, but is anyone
ever really so valuable that they are indispensable? What makes someone
indispensable in a company that has 1500 employees? Few things, but some
key skills can give you an edge. Skills such as bilingualism, abilities
with key or rare equipment, skills with software that is either so
cutting-edge or so old that only a few can manipulate it well ¼ skills
that will make you stand out in an ocean of other employees.

Move up the ladder rapidly.

Another way to deal with outsourcing is avoidance. Jobs that are
outsource-able are not key positions in the first place. Therefore, the
key is to rapidly move out of entry-level positions into positions that
are less likely to be outsourced. Look around you. If you are in a
company in an entry-level position that has 50 to 100 other people doing
the exact same tasks you are doing, you may very well be in a Danger Zone
for having your position outsourced. Make it your mission to get out of
that huge fish barrel of low-skilled fish and into a position that can
only effectively be done on home turf as rapidly as possible. Get
promoted, get higher training or education, or go for a position that is
more specialized.

Go smaller.

Consider changing jobs to a company that is smaller or more
niche-oriented. Smaller companies generally do not outsource due to
decreased cost effectiveness and often because they have a closer
relationship with their customers. While offshore outsourcing may save
dollars and improve stock prices, it often has detrimental effects on
customer relations. Small companies cannot afford to lose customers
because of poor customer service or language barriers and are therefore
less likely to outsource offshore.

Go where the jobs are.

Displaced garment and textile workers in the Carolinas and other Southern
states were left jobless almost overnight in the nineties when their
employers moved operations to Central America or Asia. Those who did not
have transferable skills or were unwilling to relocate were left
floundering. Workers who thrived were the ones who learned new skills
that were in demand or who were willing to move to areas where their
current skills were needed.

Stay on the cutting edge of your field.

Work that is outsourced is generally grunt work that requires a labor
force that is broadly skilled in the most common tasks, works with the
most common applications, or can handle minimal communication coupled
with heavy, repetitive-type work. There is always demand for skilled
professionals who can work easily with the latest and greatest
technology, who do not fear risk-taking and enjoy the challenge of
development and innovation.

Will offshore outsourcing suddenly cease? Not a chance as long as the
American consumer continues to demand high-end technology for rock-bottom
prices. The race to maintain market share while maintaining profits,
demands cheaper and cheaper labor costs. Offshore outsourcing is a
solution to that problem. It behooves American engineering and
information technology workers not to be a part of the problem to begin
with by pursuing education and training that sets them above their
offshore labor competitors and takes them out of the fish barrel of
low-end, low paid support type positions. America has always been the
leader in innovation and development and engineers who concentrate on
those areas will always have a place in this economy.
